How
to Use This Website Important!
The prices on all plants sold by Oak Hill Gardens are determined by the size and condition of the plant ( not by the size of the pot - we include the pots for free!). We feel that this is the fairest way to offer our orchids. Pot sizes are provided to give the catalog user a general idea of the size ranges of the plants. Because of the size of our nursery, we have 2-3 full-time employees dedicated to the potting of orchids throughout the year. Even so, we sometimes have trouble keeping up with the repotting of our many varieties. At times you may receive a freshly repotted plant. You may also receive a plant that may be slightly overgrown in its pot (we try to repot plants that are in need of fresh media before sending them to you). In this catalog, plants varieties have been listed with one size, or in many cases two or three sizes for each variety. The higher the price, the larger the plant. Blooming size plants are denoted with an asterisk (*) next to the price. This means that they are of sufficient size to bloom in the next normal blooming season for that particular variety. Many, but not all, varieties have previously bloomed. If this is important to you, please contact us for clarification. In some cases, we have larger and smaller sizes available than what is listed on the website. You may indicate in the comments section with your order if you desire larger or smaller plants "if available." If there is more than one price listed for a given variety, please click on the price you wish to pay for your plant, which will relate directly to the pot size. LIGHT REQUIREMENTSTo help you determine the best possible growing location for your orchid, we are now listing general light requirements guidelines next to each genus category in the main body of the catalog. If you have specific questions about the growing condition of a given species within that genus, it is best to contact us or refer to a book or internet reference. One of the best references for orchid species is Jay Pfahl's comprehensive "Internet Orchid Species Encylopedia" web page. It can be found at www.orchidspecies.com. It is an invaluable resource! LOW LIGHT = shady light conditions. Plants must be protected from bright sun. However, bright light is usually required for blooming. The best household locations are an east window. A south or west window is OK only if shade is provided. An unobstructed very bright north window may also provide sufficient light for plants that fall into this category. MEDIUM LIGHT = Plant varieties in this category can tolerate some direct sun, either early morning or late afternoon. They must be protected from the bright (hot!) mid-day rays of the sun beating on their leaves. The best locations are in an east window, or in a south or west window which is filtered during the hot summer months. HIGH LIGHT = These plants require some direct sun for growth and blooming. A very bright east window, a west or a south window are all suitable for high light plants. If the plants are outside during warm weather, they will need a bit of shade or they will burn in the direct rays of the mid-day summer sun. In general, softer leafed plants and plants with no pseudobulbs require more shade and are usually low to medium light plants. They also generally like to stay on the moist side. Plants with thick leaves of heavy substance and pseudobulbs usually require more light to grow and bloom successfully. These are usually medium to high light plants. These plants also store more water in their leaves and pseudobulbs and in general like to dry out a bit before a thorough watering.
